SEX AND BACK PAIN

Sex and BackpainThere is no valid reason why most back pain sufferers cannot engage in satisfying sexual activity.

As an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in conservative back care management, I have found many patients reluctant to even discuss with me their dilemma in dealing with sexual problems associated with back pain.

Failure and interpersonal conflict affects libido as well as intensifying back pain and this creates a cyclical atmosphere of stress, confrontation, hostility and depression.

If severe back and/or leg pain is present, active sexual activity is usually not advisable and most often is not desirable. Acute back pain should be allowed to ease before engaging in sexual activity.

As symptoms ease, passive sexual activity with gentle pelvic tilting (one of the most important back positions) is unlikely to cause a problem, and indeed should be encouraged.

The back should be kept straight and supported as much as possible. Placing a pillow beneath the small of the back provides added comfort for many people in the lying position.

If back pain is intensified during sexual activity, stop, evaluate your back posture, and intensity of movement and if necessary assume a more passive attitude in a more fully supported position.

Since back pain has several causes anatomically, positions may have to be experimented with, to find the most comfortable for each individual participant.

Principles

1. Avoid bending, twisting and arching.

2. Keep your back supported with a pillow under the curve of the back whenever in the lying position.

3. Maintain as straight a back as possible when not lying.

4. Learn the pelvic tilt maneuver and use it.

5. When in pain be a passive participant.
